Subject January 2, 2025, IMAP/POP3 logins will require two-step authentication. Date

Hello, this is Kakao Mail.

To make our service even safer, we will be strengthening IMAP/POP3 login security as of Thu, Jan. 2, 2025.
When using your Kakao account to log in to different email programs or when syncing Kakao Mail externally via third-party email service providers (e.g., Gmail, Nate, Naver), you will required to use 2-step verification according to our new strengthened login security policy.

1. Effective

Thu, Jan. 2, 2025.

2. Applicable
All users logging in with IMAP/POP3

- When enabling IMAP/POP3 and trying to log in to other email programs (e.g., Apple Mail, Outlook, Thunderbird)
- When trying to register or sync Kakao Mail externally via third-party email service providers (e.g., Gmail, Nate, Naver)

This also applies to users who were already using IMAP/POP3, including those who switch from ‘Disabled’ to ‘Enabled’.

3. Content

When logging in to imap/pop3, use 2-step authentication and create/use an app password.

* 2-step verification (also known as 2FA) is a dual authentication security method that requires a second form of authentication that has been created in advance to safely log in after entering your Kakao account information.
How to use 2-step verification >

* You can use IMAP/POP3 with Kakao Mail after setting up 2-step verification and creating an app password.
Create an app password >

* When you enable IMAP/POP3 and log in to other email programs (e.g., Apple Mail, Outlook, Thunderbird), please enter the app password you created and not your Kakao account password.
Help on 2-step verification >

Before using your Kakao account to log in to other email programs or before syncing Kakao Mail externally via third-party email service providers, please confirm whether you have set up 2-step verification and correctly enter the app password that you created.

We will continue to do our best to provide even better services.

Thank you.
